Heather began volunteering with TeleCheck over ten years ago after learning about the opportunity from a friend, fellow community contributor and program founder, Katherine.
Impressed by the program she jumped right in and began helping support adults aged 55+ who wished to remain in their homes. TeleCheck is available every day of the year and Heather helps to make check-in calls on a regular time slot weekly and fills in for other shifts as needed.
“What I like best is the opportunity is to get to know such interesting people in our community. That includes the people who we phone and the people we volunteer with,” said Heather.
COVID-19 has taken away from being able socialize with other TeleCheck volunteers, something which Heather holds dearly, but it has not stopped the calls. The team can provide remote volunteering by making daily check-in calls from their homes.
Heather’s favorite moments volunteering are those spent making connections with others; it is not uncommon to hear the team signing Happy Birthday over the phone.
“We may not always be in tune, but it is always delivered with joy and laughter,” said Heather.
Heather’s biggest wish is to have this service available across the province so that when the day comes that she is in need, for whatever reason life brings, it will be available to her.
Thank you, Heather, for your time, talents and laughter.
