Ashley's Story

Meet Ashley, Patient Family Advisor
Ashley joined our Patient Family Advisory Partnership in November 2018 following her mother’s admission to D-Wing.

While visiting her mom in the family lounge, a few staff members approached her about a hospital renovation project in the space and asked her thoughts on the work underway. Later, one of those staff members returned and asked if she would be interested in joining the Patient Family Advisory Partnership.

“I have lived in Orangeville for 16 years and at the time thought what a great way to give back to my community,” recalled Ashely.

As a Patient Family Advisor, Ashely lends her voice on behalf of the community. She participates in various meetings and provides insight into matters at hand from the patient/family/caregiver perspective.

“I like the way the staff make me feel valued and part of the solution. I get the opportunity to speak my thoughts and they are heard. We are always thanked for the time that we give, and we are seen as part of the team. It has been a great way to heal from the loss of my Mum,” said Ashely.

The pandemic has certainly had an impact on every facet of our hospital including our Patient Family Advisory Partnership. Our volunteers have not been able to come onsite and it can be hard to capture feeling from behind a monitor.

“I used to walk down the hallway and people would recognize me in the hospital. Now, we do not see the staff so we are not able to build that partnership with them through conversation. We still wave at each other across the screen, but it is not the same,” said Ashley.

The role of the Patient Family Advisor is an important one; ensuring that the patient voice is part of everything we do. Our hospital is richer because of people like Ashley.

We look forward to the day we can welcome back all our volunteers. Know, each of you are all missed greatly.
